The annual feast of Our Lady of Vailankanni Shrine at Stella Maris Church, Kalmady, was celebrated with great devotion and solemnity on Friday, 15 August 2025.

Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi, presided over the festal Eucharistic celebration. In his homily, the bishop reflected on the maternal love and intercessory role of Mother Mary. He highlighted the significance of the Assumption, describing it as a divine gift to Mary and a sign of hope for the faithful.

“Mother Mary is the Queen of Faith, and we celebrate this feast with that conviction. In today’s world filled with fear and uncertainty, she stands as a guiding light. She entrusted her entire life to God’s will and remained firm even in moments of pain and loss. Her example inspires us to remain steadfast in faith, to carry our crosses with courage, and to trust in God’s plan,” he said.

The bishop drew two lessons from Mary’s life: her unwavering trust in God and her readiness to help those in need. He urged the faithful to emulate her virtues by depending on God in times of both joy and sorrow, and by extending a helping hand to the less fortunate. He encouraged the congregation to pray through Mary’s intercession and to live a life of faith and service.

V. Rev. Fr Baptist Menezes, Rector of the Shrine, thanked all those who worked tirelessly to prepare for the feast. Donors and benefactors were honoured during the celebration with blessed candles presented by the bishop as a gesture of gratitude.

The day witnessed thousands of devotees thronging the shrine to seek the blessings of Our Lady of Vailankanni. The atmosphere was filled with devotion as the faithful participated in prayers, lit candles, and joined in the Eucharistic celebrations. A fellowship meal was served to all, adding to the spirit of communion and togetherness.
